Motorhome Travel Guide: KwaZulu-Natal

Tucked away in Southern Africa, Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) is a small nation with a big personality – known for its stunning scenery, vibrant traditions and genuine hospitality. A traveller entering Eswatini requires a valid passport for up to 3 months minimum.

Visas for Eswatini are not required by the following nationals : Australian,British,Canadian, USA and other EU for stays of up to 30 days, excluding Bulgaria and Romania.

Nationals are advised to contact the embassy /high commission to confirm visa requirements.

Types of entry and cost are : Single-entry visa: E80; multiple-entry visa: E300 (three months), E700 (six months), E1,000 (nine months) or E1,300 (12 months).

  • The currency in Eswatini is the Lilangeni plural Emalangeni (E)
  • South African Rands are accepted everywhere and it is not necessary to exchange them.
  • Credit cards such as Mastercard Visa and American Express are accepted in most places but not for the purchase of petrol.

Eswatini sales tax rate is 15%

Tourists who purchase goods within Eswatini and take goods out of the country, are required to declare goods. They would need to purchase a form and fill it in for the declaration processes (form cost 41.50 ZAR) The allowance for goods out of Eswatini should be to the value of 250 ZAR per person.

It would be wise to be up to date with vaccinations on tetanus, polio, diphtheria and hepatitis A. If you are travelling from a yellow fever epidemic region, a proof of vaccination against yellow fever is needed. However a yellow fever vaccine is not needed for Eswatini alone. Vaccinations against Cholera is no longer required for Eswatini.

If you are travelling to the Eastern side of Eswatini (the lowveld and Lubombo Mountains) including reserves of the Lubombo Conservancy, Anti-Malarial pills are required.

Banks are generally open between Monday to Friday 8:30AM – 3:30PM and Saturdays until 1PM

Swazi and English are Eswatini’s two official languages spoken widely across the country, minority languages spoken are Zulu, Tsonga and Afrikaans.

  • Dress code is general informal casual wear, if you are going on a safari  natural neutral colours are recommended over light/ bright  colours.
  • In winter especially in the uplands region, it gets very cold in the evening. Extra sweaters and a warm jacket may be required. Early morning drives and night drives can be very cold so warm clothing would be essential.
