KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), known as the “Zulu Kingdom,” is one of South Africa’s most diverse provinces. From the warm Indian Ocean beaches of Durban to the majestic Drakensberg Mountains and the cultural heartland of the Zulu people, the region offers a mix of adventure, history, and natural beauty. Self-drive holidays are popular, with routes leading through game reserves, mountain passes, and coastal towns. Visitors can experience Big Five safaris, traditional Zulu culture, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the Drakensberg.
Visitors to KwaZulu-Natal must comply with South African entry regulations. A valid passport with at least 2 blank pages and valid for 30 days beyond departure is required. Some nationalities may need a visa; check with South African authorities before travel.
The currency is the South African Rand (ZAR).
Credit cards and debit cards are widely accepted, and ATMs are available in all major towns and cities.
Value Added Tax (VAT) is 15%. Tourists can claim VAT refunds on certain goods purchased in South Africa and exported on departure.
Summer (Nov–Feb) – Light, breathable clothing, swimwear, and sun protection; pack a light rain jacket for tropical showers.
Spring/Autumn (Mar–May / Sept–Oct) – Comfortable clothing with a light jacket for cooler evenings.
Winter (Jun–Aug) – Mild along the coast (light sweaters), but warm layers are essential if visiting the Drakensberg Mountains.
KwaZulu-Natal is a malaria area only in the far north (near Mozambique/Swaziland borders, e.g., iSimangaliso and northern Zululand). Prophylaxis is recommended for those regions.
Private and public hospitals in Durban and Pietermaritzburg provide excellent medical care.
